Sound  for Mucus Motivation/Airway Clearance

Certain patient populations have issues with mucus accumulating in the airway and due to the condition the patient cannot get the mucus out.  In the past there have been several therapies and products that clinicians tried to help the patient get the Mucus out.  In the early days the patient would be placed on a table of some sort in the reverse trendlenburg position to let gravity help, then beat the patient on the back.  It was named Percussive Therapy or Chest Physiotherapy, perhaps to make it sound less uncomfortable!  As time passed there were devices like PEP Therapy and Vibratory devices that all use mechanical energy (Pressure) to "shake" the Mucus loose.

There are two new technologies on the market that have both been released and approved in the last two years.  Both products have Clinical studies that show how well they work.  Both use sound to create a physiological condition that thins secretions and causes Mucus to move.  One device is more for the patient that can do the therapy on themselves and is called Lung Flute.  The other is more for the patient that needs a clinician to perform the therapy on them, although some patients can perform the therapy on themselves with the Frequencer also.  As with all medical devices, every patient is unique and may have varying results.

Cystic Fibrosis, Pneumonia, COPD, and CHF are four of the patient conditions that can benefit from therapy using sound for Mucus motivation.  To learn more about the two devices click on the links below
